BenevolentAI announces New York office opening and new hires

BenevolentAI, one of the world’s largest private AI companies, today announced it is expanding its footprint in the United States by opening an office in New York City and has made two significant hires - Keith Hall, from Google, and Daniel Neil, from the Institute of Neuroinformatics, that will form the foundation of the new New York BenevolentAI team.

Since it was founded in 2013, BenevolentAI has been building and applying artificial intelligence (AI) to the world’s new natural resource – data, to generate and probe science’s ‘hidden knowledge’.  BenevolentAI plans to grow a specialist team of AI researchers and scientists in New York to help it continue its mission of accelerating scientific discovery with technology.

Keith Hall joins the New York office of BenevolentAI as Principal Natural Language Researcher.  Keith has spent the past 19 years working on natural language understanding.  He was formerly a Research Scientist at Google where he worked on structured and unstructured models of natural language to improve contextual speech recognition, Google keyboard, web search, and sponsored search.  Prior to Google, Keith was an Assistant Research Professor of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University.  He earned his PhD from Brown University, followed by a postdoc at Johns Hopkins CLSP and has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers.

Daniel Neil joins BenevolentAI as a Lead Machine Learning Researcher.  He received his PhD from the Institute of Neuroinformatics at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland where he focussed on co-developing deep learning algorithms and novel hardware to improve machine learning, using inspiration from neuroscience. Daniel is a graduate of Stanford University in Biomedical Computation and holds an MSc in Neural Systems and Computation from ETH Zurich.

Ken Mulvany, Founder and Chairman of BenevolentAI commented: “The opening of a New York office demonstrates our commitment to expanding as a global company and underlines the importance of having a footprint in the US with the access to talent, innovation, and commercial opportunities that being connected to one of the world’s centres of technology provides”.
